Our selection for March is the well-named book
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford. We are going to have the best discussion! There is so much to talk about; parent/child relationships, Chinese/Japanese cultures and relationships, the culture of the early '40s, the home front during WWII, Seattle, the Minidoka internment camp, friendships, love, and jazz. This book isn't a page-turner, but it's thoughtful, well written, smooth, and a fascinating story. The narrative jumps back and forth between the war years and 1986. The writing, the story, and the cast of characters remind me of jazz music - lots of interesting sounds and rhythms that somehow blend together smoothly. I think you'll like this book. I know you'll like our discussion.
